Venison Bites by Feelwells: Review
Ok, first I'll let you know a secret...I've always been extremely squeamish about venison. Not only does the thought of trying it make me feel queasy but I've been less than enthusiastic when I've seen rows of 'venison' sausages in pet stores. My irrational aversion to feeding dogs venison I believe is a result of previously volunteering at a beautiful park with a deer sanctuary...many visitors exclaimed how good they'd be served with a glass of red wine. I really didn't like the thought of people envisaging them on a plate.

However, I recently discovered that venison is regarded to have many healthy properties that are beneficial to dogs. Due to my lack of culinary knowledge (especially where meat is concerned), I hadn't realised that venison has long been considered as being amongst the healthiest of red meats, mainly due to its low fat content and high protein. It is especially recommended for maintenance of joint health, and so particularly beneficial for large dogs, or those more prone to joint problems.
For my dogs I opted for venison treats from a brand I trust, Feelwells. I've been very impressed with this brand before and regularly purchase their training treats (check out the cheese flavour). Feelwells Venison Bites are made from 100% British Venison and contain no artificial colourings, flavours, of preservatives. They are simply air dried pieces of pure venison and what's more are grain free so good for sensitive tums.
When I opened the packet I was pleasantly surprised. I've been told that venison has an overpowering smell, but really, I did not find the odour offensive at all. Dozer the Bulldog thought they smelt absolutely amazing. He was sat down paw raised quicker than an contestant in obedience championship. I was also pleased how excited Dougie the four year old Scottie was about these, as he has turned up his nose at Air Dried treats on numerous occasions. He actually loved these. The treats have a firm texture, although despite this none of my three testers had any difficulty chewing them, even though one of them (Archie) is an elderly Scottish Terrier. In addition to this, I had no problem breaking them into smaller pieces. Being air dried, they are not messy in the slightest, meaning I can even pop them in a training treat bag as an extra special reward. On a quick note about the packaging, the resealable bag is really good, and the labelling is very clear......
I must also highlight another product bonus, and that is that Feelwells have been awarded accreditation by the Ethical Company Organisation, meaning that their products are not tested on animals, nor support factory farming. This is something that is very important to myself when shopping for pet food. Overall, these are a big hit and a I'm happy to know that this is a treat that has health benefits too 🐶
